With fall right around the corner, it’s time to soak up every last drop of summer before we trade in our swimsuits for cozy sweaters. Rightfully so, many Americans see Labor Day weekend as a chance—and extra day—to squeeze in one more vacation before the season shift is official. According to Vacasa's 2022 Summer Travel Trends, 25% of U.S. travelers planned on making the most of the long weekend by booking a Labor Day getaway.

So, where is everyone headed to give summer a proper send-off? We scoured Vacasa.com data to find the most-searched for Labor Day getaways (September 2–5, 2022), and fittingly, the top three are all beach towns. Each destination offers miles of sand and boatloads of fun, so it’s no surprise that guests are making their escape to one of these end-of-summer hotspots. Plus, you’ll find vacation rentals that are just beach-y in each locale, with sweeping water views, kitchens perfect for post-sun sandwich making, and ample space to accommodate parties of any size.

Without further ado, we introduce Vacasa’s top three Labor Day destinations.

Ocean City, Maryland

With miles of sandy beaches and a boardwalk worth boasting about, Ocean City, Maryland, is the answer for travelers looking to soak up every last drop of summer. The three-mile-long boardwalk, recognized by USA Today as one of the best in the nation, is perfect for a daytime stroll, but also comes alive at night with amusement rides and beachfront music. The food scene? Also fantastic. The restaurants serve up vibrant local produce along with Maryland crab fresh from the boat and ready to crack into—a mallet and napkins are essential, dunking in butter is optional.

Destin, Florida

Destin is a part of the Florida panhandle where waves crash in from the Gulf of Mexico onto its sugar-white beaches. There is no shortage of “must dos” when visiting, starting with a trip to Crab Island, a sandbar that draws quite a crowd. Rent a boat and drop an anchor to enjoy a day on the (shallow) water or shuttle over to one of the floating bars. For a more mellow day, stay ashore and explore the HarborWalk Village or cruise down Scenic Highway 30A and discover the boutique beach towns that dot the coast.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

Last but not least, Gulf Shores is a classic beach escape on the coast of Alabama, known for its stilted houses and family-friendly attractions. Visitors can head to Gulf State Park to hike 28 miles of trails, cast a line from the largest pier on the Gulf (with luck, you’ll reel in a red snapper), or explore the freshwaters of Lake Shelby. When it is time for a break from the beach, the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo offers fun for everyone, with 300 diverse animals to meet—and even feed, if you make a stop at the petting zoo.
