Where is Moosehead Lake?
Measuring nearly 40 miles in length and encompassing 74,890 acres of islands, inlets, and coves, Moosehead Lake sits in the Longfellow Mountains of Maine's wild north woods. As the largest single-state lake east of the Mississippi River, Moosehead Lake features hundreds of miles of shoreline and waterfront towns that include Greenville in the south, Ogontz and Seboomook in the north, Moosehead and Rockwood to the west, and Beaver Cove to the east. From this point on the western edge of Maine's famous 100 Mile Wilderness, you'll be only 70 miles northwest of Bangor, 150 miles north of historic downtown Portland, and 265 miles east of Montreal.

The peak boating season runs between Memorial Day and early September, with boat launches available at Greenville Junction Wharf, Rockwood Town Landing, Lily Bay State Park, and Seboomook. May and June are also a wonderful time to glimpse the local resident moose at dusk and dawn, whether you join a guided moose-watching safari or take a scenic drive to Kokadjo, Lazy Tom Bog, or Mt. Kineo.
Choose from an incredible variety of summer hiking trails, which include the easy paths through Lily Bay State Park and Moxie Falls, the 1.5-mile Little Kineo Mountain Trail that overlooks Mt. Katahdin, and the more challenging ascent of Big Spencer Mountain. Just be sure to keep your eyes and ears open for black bears, otters, pileated and black-backed woodpeckers, herons, and eagles.
Come wintertime, the lake (which reaches a maximum depth of 246 feet) is popular for ice fishing, while the surrounding woods offer more than 100 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails and ungroomed snowshoe paths. Test your snowmobiling and ice climbing skills, watch the famous Wilderness Dog Sled Race each February, and spend a day or two at Big Moose Mountain in Greenville to ski and snowboard a total of 30 downhill trails.
