Tucked into a pine- and spruce-laden landscape, Rockwood sits off Highway 6 on the western edge of Moosehead Lake, the state’s largest body of freshwater. With little discernible population, it’s an unincorporated town that swells in spring and summer with tourists, but lies largely dormant in other seasons. Lying 89 miles northwest of Bangor and 173 miles north of bustling Portland, Rockwood is the kind of place where everyone’s on a first-name basis.
Step outside your vacation rental to breathe in the fresh, piney air, then lace up some hiking boots for a wilderness walk at Mt. Kineo State Park. Wind around the park’s perimeter to find scenic lookouts with panoramic views high above the rolling hill landscape. Pause at the pinnacle of 1,789-foot Mt. Keep going east from Greenville (34 miles one-way from Rockwood) to reach the Hundred-Mile Wilderness, a remote section of mixed deciduous and evergreen woods with abundant wildlife, pristine ponds and lakes, and one of the most challenging stretches of the iconic Appalachian Trail.
But if you’re not up for a challenging hike, you could continue your exploration on Highway 6, turning north to Beaver Cove on the lake’s eastern shores or driving on to Lily Bay State Park. Plus if you come during winter, the park’s trails are great for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
