Sullivan’s Island vacation rentals are convenient to beaches that are both serene and pristine, thanks to careful preservation and limited development. The beaches here are prime territory for collecting seashells and sand dollars. There’s also a trail that runs from the beach through a 200-acre maritime forest, plus a 2,000-foot-long nature boardwalk that winds through protected lands.

If you’re a history buff, be sure to visit Fort Moultrie, which dates back to the American Revolutionary War, when the fledgling fort held off the British Royal Navy for nine hours, saving Charleston from British occupation in 1776. Interestingly, famed poet Edgar Allan Poe was an Army soldier stationed at Fort Moultrie for 13 months in 1827-28. Years later, Poe authored “The Gold-Bug,” one of his most famous works, the setting for which was none other than Sullivan’s Island.

Poe’s Tavern, a quirky and tasty restaurant on Sullivan’s Island, pays homage to everyone’s favorite goth poet while serving up delicious tavern fare. Try a gourmet burger from the Poe-themed menu, like the “Annabel Lee,” which comes topped with a Charleston-style crab cake and fresh remoulade. Pair it with a draft beer from one of the local breweries, and you’ve got a fitting meal for this “kingdom by the sea.”

After a full day of adventure and sightseeing, you’ll be glad to retire to the comfort of your Sullivan’s Island vacation rental. Fire up the grill, relax in front of the television, or just head to bed and rest up for what’s to come the next day.
