The neighborhood:
In central Waikiki, the beach is only one part of the day. Start with a shoreline walk or a surf lesson, then browse the shops and restaurants along Kalakaua Avenue before coming back for a swim. Nearby Ala Moana Beach Park offers broad lawns and gentler-water swimming, while Diamond Head adds a memorable morning hike. The Ala Wai Canal is close on the inland side, giving this pocket of Honolulu both city views and island atmosphere. It is a great neighborhood for visitors ready to experience Waikiki at their own pace.
Getting around:
Honolulu Airport (HNL) is about 20 to 30 minutes away, depending on traffic. A rental car is optional here because Waikiki and much of Honolulu are very walkable, and rideshare and bus service cover many other trips. Beaches, shopping, and dining may be steps away. Parking is typically through hotels or paid lots rather than free street parking.
