Where is Big Sky, MT?

In Southwest Montana, nestled in the Rocky Mountains, the community of Big Sky is composed of two resort areas sharing one mountain. But room to roam is the least of guests’ concerns. These two resorts come together to create “the Biggest Skiing in America,” totaling over 5,800 acres—or two acres of terrain per rider. With plenty of room to roam, guests can fully experience Montana’s vastness and open skies. The college city of Bozeman is an hour away with a plethora of shops and restaurants, as is Yellowstone’s westmost access point. In fact, Big Sky has earned the nickname “Basecamp to Yellowstone” for its convenience and proximity.

There is a wide range of activities in Big Sky that varies year-round. Of course, in the winters, skiing and snowboarding are a major source of entertainment—Big Sky receives over 400 inches of snow annually! Not only will you be skiing on some of the best powder in the Rockies, but you’ll be treated to incredible views of the surrounding mountains. Though Big Sky is at an elevation of 7,510 feet, the nearby Lone Mountain towers over visitors at a mammoth 11,167 feet. Don’t worry if you’re new to skiing, as the resort offers private and group lessons. Adults and children can use this as a great way to “get your feet under you” and learn the ropes.

For a more challenging climb through lush meadows and beneath towering mountain crags, try the seven-mile Beehive Basin hike.

Adrenaline junkies can indulge in ziplines for a real rush. Or take the Swift Current scenic chair lift up 1,648 vertical feet to Lone Mountain, where a guide will take you on a vehicle tour through flora, fauna and incredible panoramas. If you’re looking for activities that involve less white-knuckling, Big Sky resort also has its own 18 hole golf course for a relaxing day on the green. Kids can try their hand at the putt-putt golf course and bungee trampoline. As of 2018, the resort also hosts the annual Moonlight Music Festival, which hosts an impressive lineup and delivers the outdoor musical performance of a lifetime.
