Distant Shores, one of four cabins within the Mendocino Coast Dunes Retreat, may be rented together with the other cabins for large group gatherings, or separately for a private, relaxing, comfortable place to stay during your vacation. With a dog-friendly attitude, you will feel right at home here! This two-bedroom, one-bathroom home can accommodate up to six guests, and you are even welcome to bring your beloved dogs with you for a nightly fee per dog and a minimum fee per stay. With a queen-size bed in each bedroom and an additional sofabed, everyone will have a comfortable place to rest up for another day of vacation! In the living room, you will find plenty of ways to keep entertained, whether you prefer watching cable TV or a DVD, playing a board game, using the Internet to stay connected, watching the flickering flames in the lovely gas fireplace, or simply gazing out the windows at the beautiful scenery. A full kitchen has all the tools and equipment you may need to cook meals during your visit, and a laundry area will come in handy during longer stays.

Outside, you will be pleased to find a nice deck with seating and a firepit! You and your guests will love using the firepit to cook up s'mores for dessert. The Distant Shores would be a great place to enjoy a nice vacation with your family or a few close friends, though you could also rent it with the other three cabins in the complex and bring a large group to vacation together! With Fort Bragg just a few miles down the highway, take a quick trip into the city for a nice meal at a restaurant, some groceries, or to explore the town. This comfortable, accessible, and amenity-filled home is ready to welcome everyone to their fabulous vacation!

Situated about seven miles north of Fort Bragg, this home is right next to the beautiful sand dunes. The beach is just past the dunes, about half a mile, though the walk is a bit of a hike - drive just south to MacKerricher State Park for easy beach access and amazing views of the ocean and dunes.

The yard area was fantastic. Our dog had lots of room. He also played with the dogs staying next door

Love the yard space, enjoyed the location nestled behind McKercher Park and would recommend to a small family. Biggest downside being lack of doors on bedrooms for privacy. They had shudder doors that collapse open, but since there are slats, very little noise barrier between rooms. But it is the perfect size for small family of four. Probably won't rent again as my kids are getting larger, but for young families its pretty nice.

Comfortable warm coastal get away. Great fun to be had in the dunes just a short walk away. Would recommend and return.

This is a small house at the end of a very private quiet lane. The property is large and has big grassy open space and you can walk to the beach. Although it is quite a hike and I found it much easier to drive down the road a bit. I think this place would be awesome for a family and dogs in the summer. So much room to run around which I didnt get to enjoy as much since it was winter and rained a lot. But that is to be expected in the winter.

There are a few things about the house that are worth knowing. The only source of heat is the fireplace in the living room. It is a gas fireplace that is hooked up to a thermostat so once the house was warm, it was kept warm automatically which was nice. But the fireplace had to be on pretty much all the time in order to keep the house warm, and it was 52 degrees when we got there. It took hours to get the house over 65 degrees. Something to keep in mind if renting the house in the winter. It was on when we got there but maybe Vacasa could go turn on the heat earlier in the day on arrival day? More comfortable seating in the living room would be nice. The house could use a new couch and a second couch or comfortable chair. The kitchen had the basics which was fine for us since we didnt want to cook but that would be an issue if you did. The bed I slept in was comfortable but my mom said her bed was terrible.

In the end, the house was fine. But pretty expensive for "fine".
Manager response:

We are a family of 4. The home was very cute and cozy. Its worth the distance from Fort bragg. I would absolutely stay again. The one suggestion I could make is please please change the bedroom doors from shutters to regular doors. There is no privacy whats so ever for romance if you aren't alone on vacation.
Robin B. May 2021
Nice location. Easy access to the dunes. Not much privacy in the bedrooms because of louvered doors. Nice large yard and outdoor seating area. Hot tub is not functioning, which was a bit of a disappointment. Off the highway and very quiet.
Manager response:
Hi Robin! Thank you for your review. We are happy to hear that you had an enjoyable stay. To clarify, this home does not have a hot tub. We apologize for the confusion! We hope to have the opportunity to host you again in the future.
Leah B. May 2021
Nice home, great location. Clean and near the ocean. We really enjoyed our stay. The only area of improvement I suggest is more comfortable beds. I slept on the couch one night because I have back issues. This bed issue is common among vacation rentals, I find. Otherwise great place! I would come again.
Bonnie S. Mar 2021
We loved the location of this home. It's a peaceful walk to the ocean and the sand dunes are beautiful. The fire pit was fun too. The only complaint I have is that it wasn't cleaned very well. When we pulled the couch bed out, it was covered in sand, dog hair, and other gross things. I was glad I brought my own sheets and blankets.
Manager response:
We are very sorry to read housekeeping missed getting the sofa bed cleaned for you and do wish you had called. This will be discussed with our staff. Thank you!
TINA R. Mar 2021
Good towels, I liked the towels..........the rest of the place was not clean and the furniture was broken down and dated. The beds were not so bad and the linens were clean. Kitchen is ill equipped for making a full meal, but there were cute beach touches I was just creeped out about the funky furniture it had a funky smell too.
Manager response:
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, Tina. We are sorry to hear you were not able to more fully appreciate the home's charm and furnishings. We make every effort to ensure our home is reflected clearly and accurately through our listing information in order for guests to make informed rental decisions. Our photos and virtual tour provide an in-depth look at the home's layout and design, though we sincerely apologize for any oversights regarding cleanliness. We would have been happy to address any areas in need of additional attention during your stay had we been notified. This concern has been addressed with housekeeping to ensure our standards and expectations are being met for every guest. We hope to host you again in the future!

My friend and I took a girls trip with our kids to this cozy cottage. We were pleasantly surprised with how special this place was and found it very hard to leave. The house itself is cozy and comfortable and met all the needs we had. The outside space is incredible. The yard looks like a green lush park with lots of room for the kids to play and run around. The fire pit made for warm story telling nights under the stars. A short walk down this dead end street, leads to the adventurous sand dunes where we saw rabbits and a coyote. After a 15 minute walk we arrived to 10 mile beach finding several whole sand dollars and treasures. This was such a special place to stay.

Great little house in a fantastic location. Nice and quiet with a beautiful walk to the beach. Only one issue. Ant's in the kitchen. Easy fix I'm sure. We'll be back. 😉
Manager response:
Hi, Alan! We will check and treat for ants as needed. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again!
Victoria L. Jan 2021
Distant Shores was a pleasant place. We enjoyed walking into a warm house with the lights already on. The house was perfect for the four of us to stay in. The only thing we wish was different was having real doors for the bedroom doors. They reminded me of closet doors so could hear everything in the entire house.
Jennifer B. Dec 2020
Cute little rental that was kid and dog-friendly. Wished there were more amenities like a non-stick pan. Disappointed the hot tub was drained. The house was a little musty as the air purifier was full. The private beach was nice and the trip over the dunes was a good hike.
Manager response:
Hi, Jennifer! We appreciate you staying with us and leaving your review. The hot tub is not available for use or advertised; we apologize for any disappointment this caused. The dehumidifier is on 24/7 and does not to be emptied in order to work; guests are welcome to do this if it fills up during their stay. We have purchased a non-stick pan. Thank you!
Keegan B. Dec 2020
Great location of the house, it’s tucked away nicely with good privacy! Place was clean cozy and gave a very home feeling. Perfect distance from the dunes and a perfect place for a quick get away(can’t beat the price)! Definitely looking forward to our next stay!! No hot tub cause of Covid witch I didn’t quite get why it was drained and off but it’s no big deal! Loved it
Elizabeth P. Oct 2020
We loved how close to the sand dunes we were. Not an easy hike out to the water but it's nice to enjoy the beach by yourself.
Tom S. Aug 2020
This has to be the quietest rental house we've ever stayed in. It's far enough from Rt. 1 you don't hear traffic, the few neighbors are quiet, it's at the end of the road to the dune so nobody drives by, and it's also incredibly dark at night so you can see lots of stars if the sky is clear.

My wife and I stayed here for 6 nights while we hiked in the various state parks in the area and biked the full length of the Haul road out and back from Cleone. It's nice that the beds are queen size and there is plenty of closet and drawer space in each bedroom. As other reviewers have noted, the bedroom doors face each other and are louvered, so not total privacy. But the bathroom is off the kitchen and doesn't share a common plumbing wall with the nearest bedroom, so no noises in the middle of the night when running water. We used the washer and dryer and both worked fine.

The kitchen is a fine for a small cottage with a dining table in the middle and an L-shaped counter. The stove is one of those infrared heat, glass-surface appliances and takes some getting used to if you're not familiar with them. The supplied cooking utensils are minimal and there are dishes for 6. Be sure and take coffee filters, salt, pepper, spices, and anything else you want for cooking.

The living room was fine for the two of us after a day of hiking. The seating is a sofa plus a round, glass-topped table with 5 club chairs. Others have noted the gas fire place for heat but we didn't use it.

Over all, this was a good place to stay for the two of us while doing day hikes and cooking at night.
Alyssa G. Aug 2020
This was a nice place for a short visit. The sand dunes were a nice surprise, we actually made the trek with two kids and made it to the beautiful beach!
John L. Jan 2020
We'd consider staying here again, but would probably consider other options first. The location can't be beat. Easy access to the dunes and eventually the beach just up the road. And the beach was nearly deserted. The house itself is fine but nothing spectacular. The only source of heat is the gas fireplace, but it did the job. The bedroom doors are shutters (presumably to allow the heat to circulate) and face each other. Not a lot of privacy. Kitchen was fine, had adequate utensils. Bathroom also fine but in need of some cosmetic repair (masking tape around an outlet is not a nice touch). Hot tub was broken (we figure they get a lot of use and are exposed to damp sea air), but they let us know that the day we were to arrive. Supposedly getting a refund of the hot tub fee. House was clean on arrival. Nothing to turn us off, just not quite what we expected given the costs.
Doreen S. Oct 2019
Set off street and lots of peaceful surrounding, with decks and birds all around. Walk to the beach through the Sand Dunes to a private beach. House was comfortable with lots room for small family or a few friends!
Christa R. Oct 2019
House was lovely
Brooke M. Jul 2019
This is a fantastic property. My girlfriends and I came up with our kiddos, age 3-7. We loved that it was removed from the tourist pack of summertime Fort Bragg. We had everything we needed and didn't leave the house the whole time we were there. There is tons of lawn space out back and the fire pit and hot tub were awesome. The dunes are great for the kids to climb and play around on. The route we used to get to the beach took us 20-30 minutes and once we got there we had the place to ourselves. Bonus features for us- tons of space in the kitchen, the couch pulled out into a bed and the water pressure in the shower is amazing. Great adventure space, super secluded and quiet. You won't be disappointed.
susan s. Jun 2019
Loved the yard and being able to walk to a deserted beach . The house was clean except the hot tub could have used a vacuuming.Had to find the beach without any info on where to walk and could not figure out how to work the indoor fireplace with no instructions left . I did appreciate the coffee, sweetner(no sugar left)and flour . But there were deck boards rotted thru outside and in the kitchen counter with unfinished edge and seemingly thrown over the top of the dishwasher. The decor needs updating
Judy H. Jun 2019
Jacuzzi was as advertised clean, working great and private. Nice quiet neighborhood. Private trail through the dunes to the beach. Great economical place to stay.
Jimmy R. Jun 2019
Loved our 2 night stay, the dunes and beach were fabulous June 9,10,11th for us! We will surely be back...Love It!
Gini L. Apr 2019
The hot tub was nice hot and clean the grounds were beautiful but mostly the vacasa crew were able to get my amiga and I help when my car wouldn’t start. The property managers were there in a jiffy and made an already beautiful stay complete without having to call a tow truck. Thanks to all we will vacation at your home again.

Beautiful and Cozy house perfect for relaxing family fun vacation
Nancy C. Jan 2019
Quiet place off the road, not to far from Fort Bragg. The house is clean and comfortable. We would stay again.
Terry C. Dec 2018
We enjoyed the house very much. It has 2 bedrooms, and indoor laundry. We like the open floor plan, and plenty of tables, chairs to sit around. The heater and fireplace were the best -- it was real cold and damp in Christmas time, and they kept us warm. The only complain I have: we did not use the hot tub, so it was not fair to not have to an option to opt out. All in all, we were glad to stay here, and would be happy to return!
Trinity N. Nov 2018
Adorable house inside and out. It was perfect for us to get away from the busy day to day life. Far enough, but close enough to everything we wanted to do. Beautiful area and can’t wait to come back with more of the family.
Lawrence H. Oct 2018
Second stay here. We'll be back!
Jennifer H. Sep 2018
My husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at Distant Shores with our two dogs. It was wonderfully private and well-equipped house. The house was close to town and we had a wonderful time.
Sarah D. Aug 2018
We came up to Fort Bragg to get away from all of the smoke in the Sacramento region and were not disappointed! I have a 4 & 7 year old who were able to explore the outdoors ALL day long without me having to hush them for running and being loud (as opposed to a hotel). The hike to 10 mile Beach was definitely a HIKE! Once there, we were the only people on the beach and immediately found WHOLE sand dollars! It was so great having the comforts of home (washer/dryer, full kitchen, separate room for the kids). We will definitely be back.
Matthew C. Aug 2018
The home was enough space for our family. Plenty of space for the kids to play outside, the hot tub was awesome. We walked to the sand dunes and it was incredible. Will definitely stay here again!
Douglass C. Jun 2018
So we’ll cared for! Spent relaxing and very peaceful week at distant shores. Highly recommend and hope to return!
Wyma W. Jun 2018
I was so happy to be there in a June, with all the blooming flowers, perfect sunny weather! Harvey, the owner, provided a most homey and comfortable house, and the hot tub was well used. I would love to go back and do more dune climbing.
HEATHER C. Apr 2018
What a magical spot! The cottage was clean, well furnished, comfortable with a spacious kitchen. The grounds are beautifully kept, private and with a fantastic rear garden and hot tub spot. And the dunes! Just a short walk down a grassy path to hills of windswept sand leading to the ocean. This is now our spot for any time we plan to stay in the Mendocino/Ft. Bragg area. Highest recommendation!
Arthur M. Mar 2018
If you are looking for a quiet comfortable place to stay after long days at the beach, this place is for you. Hot tub.. bbq, and everything you need for a fun relaxing stay. This was our 2nd stay in 6months... we will be back before the summer ends.
Lawrence H. Mar 2018
Everything was what we expected. Cottage was cute and had everything we needed for the weekend. We liked that we were secluded but not too far from town. Being so close to Mackerricher was really nice. The grounds were well kept and we enjoyed the hot tub in the evenings. We look forward to returning!
Michael G. Jan 2018
Earlier check in...more comfortable funiture for lounging
Manager response:
Our standard check-in time is 4pm, but we do offer complimentary early check-ins when available. We were able to get this guest in by 2:30pm after the property manager inspected the property. Thanks!
Gregory K. Dec 2017
the fees were astounding
Susan C. Dec 2017
- spa didn't work
- shower doors are dangerous
- shower drain did not drain
- beds are way to firm
- spot light on house next door shines into the house
Manager response:
We appreciate this feedback and apologize for any inconveniences these items may have caused. This is a new hot tub at the home, but the heater did go out during this reservation. We replaced it the day after being notified. We inspected the tub drain and found it be draining correctly, but we will keep an eye on it. For safety purposes we do need to leave the light on; we apologize if it was uncomfortably bright for these guests. Thanks!
Michael H. Nov 2017
It is so much better in person!!! We will go back
Jillian C. Nov 2017
This place was so cozy and nice. It took about 20 minutes to get up there from Fort Bragg... quiet road and the sounds of the waves crashing were incredible. Loved the decks and the stars at night.. kitchen was lovely and spacious.
ART M. Oct 2017
This little cottage was perfect for a weeks stay in beautiful Ft Bragg Area. It had everything you needed, easy access to all the surrounding areas, while being quiet and secluded. Perfect for a romantic getaway or a family vacation. We are considering renting all 4 cottages for our large family vacation sometime next year.
Toby R. Oct 2017
The location, size and layout is well suited to couples or a small family to enjoy evenings and mornings together as they spend their days experiencing local natural features and culture.
Elizabeth H. Sep 2017
Cute clean cottage. Its a work out walking up and down the sand dunes to get to the beach, but it's beatiful.
Needs new hot tub. The $150. Cleaning fee for a 2 night stay is pretty high.
June G. Sep 2017
Gorgeous property, very roomy and quiet. Lots of outdoor space.
Diane H. Sep 2017
We so enjoyed staying at this little home. It is convenient to lots of beaches. And the yard is so nice your really enjoy just staying there. Had a great BBQ outside one of the evenings and did s'mores by the firepit. A great little house!!
Liz B. Jul 2017
We stayed 3 nights at Distant Shores and it was wonderful! Lots of green grass for the dogs to play. The sound of the ocean while looking at the stars from the hot tub. Clean, comfortable beds with lots of light. A big kitchen and bathroom. We will be back!
David M. Jul 2017
Very quiet and secluded. It's a little walk to the beach through the sand dunes but it's worth it. There's no one in site except for the snowy plover. We enjoyed our stay and hopefully get to come back
Rosemary V. Jun 2017
Upon checking in at this cottage we found a note left on the kitchen counter letting us know the hot tub was out of service and that there weren't any plans to have it repaired for our stay. This was somewhat annoying, especially since we'd paid an extra 'hot tub' fee. But we let it go, and went about our vacation.

After returning home from our trip and not seeing any refund on my credit card for over a week for the 'hot tub' fee, I gave VRBO a call (whom we made this booking through), and they told us they had no information about our stay other than that our reservation had been confirmed, and that all of the info was now with Vacasa (uuggh, 3rd parties always make things so helpful, or I guess 4th parties in this case).

So, I tracked down Vacasa and left them a voicemail explaining the situation. A few hours later I saw that I had a voicemail from Mary at Vacasa saying that she had no record of us not using the hot tub while we were there (other than me calling and telling her so). And, since it had been over a week, there was probably nothing that could be done as far as issuing me a refund.

At this point I was getting pretty annoyed with the situation, since 1.) we didn't have promised hot tub one our stay 2.) I had to call and ask about a refund and 3.) I had just basically been called a liar by customer service from a company working for me.

So, I took more time out of my day to call her back and, low and behold, got her voicemail again. I explained that I didn't think I had needed to call or complain during our visit since it was explicitly laid out to us in a note left on the counter that the hot-tub was out of order. I also told her we checked out the guest book during our stay and the guests before us had noted that the hot tub was out of order for their stay as well. So... obviously the hot tub being broken was not a brief problem.

Also, this cottage had the minimal amenties for a vacation rental. I'm used to finding more in the way of kitchen supplies in many hotels I've stayed in. The place was not very clean, and after we left we stayed at the beach near there and were able to take note that the cleaning crew did not stay long at all. As guests we were also asked to start a load of laundry for the cottage (which we did, but was a bit off putting considering we were on vacation.)

Overall, disappointing stay and cannot recommend Vacasa customer service for owners or renters at this point.

Manager response:
We sincerely apologize for the confusion with the hot tub. The hot tub is now up and running, and this guest was refunded for the lack of that amenity. We will follow-up with housekeeping to ensure they are performing their cleans properly. Thanks!
Natalie W. Jun 2017
This was our 1st stay in this house. Our 2nd stay renting on this road and both times hot tub did not work. Really put a damper on our stay since our main reason for staying here was the hot tub!! We most likely wont be back since they cant seem to keep the hot tubs up and running. Overall the stay was great. House was clean upon arrival, private cozy scenery aside from the yard maintenance mowing, burning and weed eating 3 of the 5 days we were there. The walk over to the sanddunes and beach is amazing ....lots of sand dollars and shells! We love that dogs are allowed! Bring your own pillow, they were not to comfy, and bring some kind of windex to clean tables and counters off with. If you dont mind a broken hot tub and a little yard work noise then this place is a great quiet, private, relaxing getaway!
Manager response:
We are sorry to see the hot tub was out again during this guest's visit! The hot tubs do see high use; the owners are currently trying to determine if they can repair the ones in place or if it's time for new ones. Due to the size of the acreage the yardwork and landscaping is ongoing, but it always looks wonderful because of this! Thank you!

Enjoyed using this house and the convenience of it's location. House was clean and well supplied. Easy to use directions emailed to you with all needed information. Will definitely be back again!
Teresa D. Jan 2016
We've been renting vacation homes on Beal Lane for over 10 years. The sand dunes are so much fun for adults and kids. Great walk to the ocean, you never have to drive anywhere. We'll definitely be back!
James A. Jan 2016
Nice stay for the price
Amber V. Oct 2015
This home was perfect for groups that enjoy preparing meals and eating around the table, family style. The hot tub was hot hot hot/perfect.
Elizabeth R. Oct 2015
The house was in very bad condition. The hot tub didn't work all the time and we kept having to flip the circuit breaker back when the jets would suddenly turn off. The house wasn't cleaned from the previous tenants visit before we got there and we had to leave the house so the staff could come clean it. The house smelled like mold and there was visible mold under the kitchen sink. The pictures make the house look better than it really is. Overall is not a good vacation rental. We will not be returning to this property or any other Vacasa vacation rental.
Manager response:
Thank you for your review. We are sorry to see that your stay was not more enjoyable. A spa technician has serviced the hot tub so it should be working without issues now, and the Property Manager will take care of the mold right away. We hope you enjoyed the homey atmosphere and made terrific memories while staying with us!
