The interior of the elevated house is warm and inviting, with sloped wooden ceilings and huge windows. Curl up on the couch and put in a rented DVD, or flip through cable until you find something interesting. If you're planning to go out on the water, log onto the free WiFi and check the weather report before you head out.

Take the time to prepare an elaborate Sunday brunch in the fully equipped kitchen, which has ample counter space and stools where people can perch and chat with the cooks. A blender and mixer speed up food prep, and the coffeemaker makes sure that you're adequately caffeinated while you work.

When you're done, bring your meal outside to eat on the shaded porch overlooking the canal. On a warm afternoon, fire up the gas barbecue on the lower deck and grill some burgers.

This home offers a queen and double bed, as well as a bunk bed in the newly converted garage bedroom, making this home great for couples traveling together. Six people will sleep comfortably here, and for a small nightly fee two dogs of up to 25 pounds are welcome to come along. In the garage space, a private washer and dryer keeps up the supply of fresh linens if you're staying for a while and there's also a full bath with a tub (no shower) and a bunk bed. Learn about aviation at the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston, or about locomotion at the Galveston Island Railroad Museum, which has some of the largest restored exhibits in the US. Be sure to stop at the Pleasure Pier for carnival games, or check out The Strand Historic District's shops and restaurants.

Visit Moody Gardens, a nearby amusement park with educational exhibits and varied attractions, to see an IMAX movie or watch the fish in the aquarium. For an authentic ride, take an hour-long cruise on the replica Colonel Paddlewheel Boat. There's even a golf course where you can book tee times!
